Anyone Want to Read a Book With Me?

Hey everyone who reads this. I was wondering if any of you might want to read a book with me? It's called "The Heart of Christianity" and it's written by one of my favorite heretics, Marcus J. Borg.

Let me know what you think.

  1. I would. I've been thinking about if and how I would/could get re-connected to faith in a tangible and meaningful way. Looks like this book might provide a pathway... or at least a basis for more discussion!

  2. I am willing to if we can set up some kind of "schedule." Count me in. Especially over Xmas break.

  3. Wow, I'm not sure what "re-connecting to faith" might be... is this a heady book or an easy read?

  4. Awesome everyone. Let's talk about it more on Sunday morning.

The book is not really "heady," but that's just really in reference to the style of writing. The concepts demand as much thought as anyone would be willing to put into them. I thought it was a pretty easy read and really enjoyed the way he presents the life of Jesus.

I read this quite awhile ago, so as we go through it together I'm sure you will see how much it has influenced me =) That should be fun for me to hear if any of the concepts sound familiar to you all of you.

  5. Well, Sunday morning didn't really work out now, did it? We could either wait to talk about stuff 'till next sunday, or we could talk about it here, or we could get together for dinner or something on thursday night. I know Jason's schedule doesn't work for the thursday night get together too well, but we could get him caught up on sunday. Just a thought.

    What do you all think?

  6. Shit. I wish I'd read this earlier...Uhhhh, I think we ought to talk about it Sunday. Unless we can have people over on Sat to talk about this stuff and then watch Harry Potter afteward? Oh yeah, Jason's not out 'til 8:30...Sunday then.

  7. I think we should get together and talk about this outside of sunday morning. It would be fun to just meet and talk about what it would mean to read a book together. We could just do that and nothing else until we decided we were done doings so. What do you all think?

The obvious difficulty is scheduling such a thing. If we didn't mind it being a little later, we could do it on a friday or saturday night after Jason got off work. If that wouldn't work, we might have to brake off a sunday "morning" talk and go somewhere for lunch.

    Those are my thoughts =)

  8. any night after 9pm works for me- for drinks maybe? Otherwise, Saturday after 4pm works also.

  9. I'm also good for late evening... drinks would always be a plus. Not so good for saturday afternoons, but could make it work depending on the date.

  10. You know...what about meeting up friday - New Years day - at some point? You guys might have some family stuff going on, so that might no work, but that might be an option. Jolene had mentioned us coming over to her house in the evening on friday, so maybe we could get together before that. I know Jason is off that day, so the idea seemed promising to me.

  11. hmmm...that would be 3 days ago.
Any night after 9pm is fine with me. How do people feel about Friday or Saturday? McMenamin's on Sunnyside, perhaps, or Applebees has 1/2 price appetizers and 3$ pints after 9pm.

  12. so...let's shoot for friday night at mcmenamin's on friday night at 9:00. how does that sound? i think there's a possibility stefanie would want to be in on this too, so i'll talk to her about it. also, miriam might be up for this as well. if any of you talk to her this week you might mention it.

  13. I did not go to work yesterday or today... which means I have to work Friday! I can be there as close to 9pm as possible (maybe a bit sooner, but only a bit.) See you soon.

  14. Not sure if everyone got this or not, but Ken, Jason, Stefannie and I are planning on meeting at the Sunnyside McMenamins tonight at 9:00. Hopefully you can come too Cheryl, and I will try to get in touch with Miriam to see if she's interested. Talk to you all tonight.

  15. Hey everyone- sorry I haven't been weighing in on this. I won't be able to make it tonight but will be reading the book. I just don't have a schedule/structure for reading it (I have been doing nothing but homework for the last week) so I don't know how well I'll be able to keep up with everyone. But i do plan to read it and look forward to talking with you guys about it at some point. I don't mean to be vague, it's just I don't know yet how things will look as far as my availability to meet. Math is demanding most of my time.

  16. Tonight we're meeting at the house. I'm pretty sure you knew about this Cheryl (I'm pretty sure we talked right before you left...I hope =), but if not, let's try to nail down here on the blog when we'll meet again.

I'm good for another Friday meeting at McMennamins...but the opportunities are endless.

  17. I'm into the idea of "meeting"b online, (diablog) at a house, and at a McMennamins or the like... Kinda of rotate it around. Just an idea.

  18. I am up for meeting anytime, anywhere as well! At least for now, my schedule is wide open :) As we've started to talk about where we want this to go a little bit more, I've definitely given some thought to what I personally am hoping to get out of this 'book club'/gathering time, as well as hopefully share with the rest of you for as long as this goes on, and am looking forward to talking a little bit more about that in person the next time we are able to meet.

Also, this may be old news to some of you, but I figured it out today, and think it will be helpful for following the comments on these posts a little more easily! There should be a "subscribe by email" link at the bottom of this page, that will allow you to receive new comments via email, in case you aren't just logged onto the blog 24/7 :)
